MoFi? Or NokiaSpot?

Writing this on colafish’s sony vaio in Melbourne! Yes, we’re on a short holiday. It’s been so long since we had a break! And yes, this blog has laid dormant for a long time.

We are still alive, but life with a little hyperactive boy is quite different. We are still adjusting and trying to make things work. The poor lil boy is also sick with high grade temp, just before our trip (he must almost get into trouble before a big event… like his first bday!)

Anyway, the topic of this blog is about the recent fad of having a mobile wifi spot. Lots of telecom carriers and also end-users are selling/buying these devices that allow the user to use their computers to connect via wifi to a 3G network using the device. BUT, what many may not know is that their mobile devices already probably has support for something similar.

Today, I’m actually using JoikuSpot on the Nokia N95. JoikuSpot connects the N95 to Virgin Broadband (I am using the $2 twin pack, with each giving me 300MB!), and creates a Wifi hotspot. The speed is as good, if not better than the Huawei modem I use at home with Virgin Broadband at Home! So, if I retire my N95 for a different phone, it can easily become my Mofi device!

If you use Windows Mobile, there is WMWifiRouter (and some others) that does something similar… Unfortunately, even though I’m a licensed WMWifiRouter user, I found that it crashed my Samsung i780 in the past, to the point of needing a hard reset! Nowhere near as flawless as jokuspot on the n95.

Finally, there’s always the bluetooth method which works pretty well too!
