Bumblebee: Setting up your Windows Mobile for Three

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I am a geek :). I tend to buy gadgets and PDA phones with many features that might not be offered by the current ones offered in the market. If you are like me, you might be purchasing Windows Mobile phones that are not sold by your carrier. I am using Three network. So, the following is a quick guide to set up most Three network features on your Windows Mobile phone. I have set up mine this way and it works for me. YMMV. :) this is a brief guide. I can write a step-by-step one if there is a need for it.

Three Mail
Add an account in your mail client (e.g. Messaging). Use the following:
Use IMAP4 protocol
IMAP server: mail.three.net.au
SMTP: smtp.three.net.au
Username: your full Three email address
Password: your Three email password

If you are using gmail, you can go to settings and set it to forward mails to your Three Mail, and store another copy in gmail (so you get the mail in both your phone and your gmail). You can also set your email address to your gmail address, so people send their emails there when they reply to your mails. You can also set it to check mails every 15 minutes or the likes. (It's free on Three!)

Network settings
See screenshots below… Note that Three no longer uses separate settings for internet and My3.

X-series and other Value Packs
Setting up your phone for x-series or to purchase any value packs, see last blog entry.

Skype
See last blog entry for how to set up to use the Skype minutes included with x-series!

Streaming Videos
The instructions are here: http://thinkabdul.com/2007/06/29/download-free-htc-streaming-media-player-to-play-rtsp-3gp-audiovideo-streams-on-windows-mobile-56-pocket-pcsmartphone/
Mainly:
1. Download:
http://www.ramonshare.com/files/index.php?share=4&path=TOOLS%2FRvBCrS_HTC_Streaming_Media.cab
AND
http://www.mediafire.com/?5pjefxzvzj0
2. Copy both CAB files to your Windows Mobile device.
3. Use File Explorer to install them, and that's it!

You can try some free videos on your phone to confirm (e.g. go to Pricing). It works even with 240×240 resolution screens!

MMS settings
See screenshot below.

Well, just signed up for Mobile Email Value Pack! Guess I should keep using it and posting to the blog via email and also email people with it.

Bumblebee: Three network

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Three network has served us well. We get unlimited free email checks. In fact, emailing us at the correct email address is almost as good as an sms (we get notified about it within 15 minutes), and as good as one, if you mark your email “urgent” (we get an sms about it for free!).

The coverage has been good. We got our free Nintendo Wii…

Then, there's this problem with my Fujitsu Siemens T830 — I can't subscribe to Value Packs. If you have any non-supported Windows Mobile phones, you can try this trick:

Change your browser's (e.g. Pocket Internet Explorer) user agent to: DopodD810/Mozilla/4.0 (or other phones that are supported). You can do this by editing the registry yourself, or using programs such as SK Tools…

Three also offers X-series: there is no contract, sign up for a month and cancel as you like… you get 100MB or more (depending on which pack you get) to surf the internet. You also get free Skype minutes with each pack… 200 minutes for the cheapest. And best of all, it starts at only $12/month — 200 minutes skype + 100MB to surf. You also get to send unlimited emails.

But wait: Three says skype isn't supported on Windows Mobile phones right? Well, NO! Some bright people figured out a way! Mirroring the instructions here for reference:
1. Download the Esmertec Jbed KVM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49222&d=1188897204
2. Download the LG Shine Skype JAR here: http://rapidshare.com/files/65902670/Skype_0_5_8_LGu970_au.jar

Installing
1. Copy both files to your phone
2. Install the Esmertec Java Manager
3. Run the Java Manager and click Menu>Install>Local Files
4. It should find Skype and just install, authorise any prompts

Running
1. Just launch Skype from the new Java manager and sign in
2. To make a call, highlight any contact and click call
3. A good place to start is the Echo123 Call Testing service
4. The phone will ask if you want to dial the Skype Call number: +61430005332, press YES and it'll connect

Limitations
1. There is no touch interface with the program as it is written for the LG Shine, use the D-Pad and softkeys to control the program
2. The Minimise function in Skype does not work, it quits the program. Press the OK button on your phone to minimise.
