Writing this on colafish’s sony vaio in Melbourne! Yes, we’re on a short holiday. It’s been so long since we had a break! And yes, this blog has laid dormant for a long time.
We are still alive, but life with a little hyperactive boy is quite different. We are still adjusting and trying to make things work. The poor lil boy is also sick with high grade temp, just before our trip (he must almost get into trouble before a big event… like his first bday!)
Anyway, the topic of this blog is about the recent fad of having a mobile wifi spot. Lots of telecom carriers and also end-users are selling/buying these devices that allow the user to use their computers to connect via wifi to a 3G network using the device. BUT, what many may not know is that their mobile devices already probably has support for something similar.
Today, I’m actually using JoikuSpot on the Nokia N95. JoikuSpot connects the N95 to Virgin Broadband (I am using the $2 twin pack, with each giving me 300MB!), and creates a Wifi hotspot. The speed is as good, if not better than the Huawei modem I use at home with Virgin Broadband at Home! So, if I retire my N95 for a different phone, it can easily become my Mofi device!
If you use Windows Mobile, there is WMWifiRouter (and some others) that does something similar… Unfortunately, even though I’m a licensed WMWifiRouter user, I found that it crashed my Samsung i780 in the past, to the point of needing a hard reset! Nowhere near as flawless as jokuspot on the n95.
Finally, there’s always the bluetooth method which works pretty well too!

For those using a NAS (Network Attached Storage), such as the Ritmo LAN server that I posted about many moons ago… There is a new program that allows you to mount an FTP server as a drive on Windows… http://www.netdrive.net. It supports block transfers of files, so you don’t need to wait for all of the file to be downloaded (e.g. for a preview of the first page of a PDF, or for the file icon to load, or to play a mp3…) before you can use it. Seems to work very well so far, far better than WebDrive… This seems to be unrelated to the Netdrive by Novell (which has been discontinued).
Yup. This blog seems somewhat dead. But we are just too busy caring for a little one… There’s much to talk about. When we have time… (yeh, that’s a famous saying…)

Been busy taking of Adam while colafish goes to work. Guess that’s our excuse for not writing much. All’s good here though as our quality of life continues to improve. Adam is growing well despite the poor parenting skills :). He’s sleeping as I write this. My n95 has been godsent. Lots of candid photos of Adam were possible only because of the camera in this phone. Of course, it is also easy to post the photos online on the phone. The web browser is also the best I have used in a mobile phone (even compared to Opera 9). Then the availability of Styletap allows me to use Palm medical software on it. The bluetooth allows me to print photos to our old but still good photo printer. The phone is obviously adequate. The gps is weak but locks quickly with agps and is adequate in our real life use. Anyway, Adam is awake. Must go!

It seems that MacDonald’s has made it a point to provide free wifi in every country. It is available in Malaysia, Australia and USA for sure… A wonderful service IMHO!
Posting this as I have some brekkie. We are still alive, and Adam’s growing well. We just have little time at present. I am at home taking care of the little one while colafish has resumed her work…
Some pictures of Adam enclosed…
